About this role
Responsible for supervising the filling and dispensing of medication orders including the proper handling, usage and storage of drugs. Provides clinical services and drug information to physicians, residents and nurses ensuring appropriate drug usage. Works relatively independently under general supervision within established pharmacy policies and procedures.
Reviews and approves all initial and routine medication orders for therapeutic appropriateness and cost effectiveness. Oversees the intravenous admixture area and approves new orders prepared by the sterile products room. Supervises pharmacy technicians and interns responsible for unit-dose carts and inventory control.
Participates in daily patient rounds to advise on pharmacotherapy selection, dosage recommendations, and side effects. Interviews patients to obtain medication histories and documents allergies or adverse reactions. Engages in investigational drug studies and formulary reviews while assisting with departmental policies.
Acts as a preceptor to pharmacy students and residents. Conducts in-service education for medical staff, nurses, and other health care personnel. Participates in orientation, hiring, and training of new personnel as well as interdepartmental committees.
Requirements
- Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy
- 2-5 years hospital pharmacy experience
- Knowledge of pharmacologic and pharmacokinetic principles
- Ability to review therapeutic appropriateness of medication orders
- Experience supervising pharmacy technicians and interns
- Participation in patient rounds and drug information services
- Familiarity with FDA and DEA regulations for investigational drugs
