About this role

Under the general direction of the Pharmacy Manager, the retail staff pharmacist is responsible and accountable for proper compounding, dispensing, reviewing and verifying of prescribed medications within regulatory guidelines. This role involves ordering and receiving pharmaceutical supplies, preparing and dispensing pharmaceuticals, and preparing billing statements. It ensures compliance in the NIC Retail Pharmacy department.

Daily tasks include filling prescriptions by compounding and dispensing medications following physician orders. Weigh, measure, and mix drugs to fill bottles or capsules accurately. Ensure patients understand instructions and advise on proper storage of prescription medications.

Maintain medication storage using refrigeration for biologicals, vaccines, and drugs subject to deterioration. Order and maintain supplies of drugs and pharmaceuticals. Provide professional information to physicians on new drugs, warnings, and incompatibilities while instructing interns and overseeing pharmacy technicians.

Keep detailed records on prescriptions filled and compute charges for billing. Opportunities include obtaining licensure as a Pharmacist and Preceptor’s license within specified timelines. Perform other duties as assigned in a supportive pharmacy environment.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited pharmacy degree program (Bachelor of Science or Pharm. D)
  • Licensed Pharmacist by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy or obtain licensure within 90 days of hire
  • Possess or obtain an Oklahoma Preceptor’s license within one year of hire
  • BLS certification and Immunization Administration Certificate preferred
  • Basic computer skills
  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information
  • Knowledge of professional standards and state and federal guidelines governing the dispensing of drugs
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Fill prescriptions by compounding and dispensing medications following prescriptions issued by physicians, dentists or other authorized practitioners
  • Weigh, measure, and mix drugs and other medicinal compounds to fill bottles or capsules with correct quantity and composition
  • Ensure patients understand prescribed instructions and advise regarding storage for prescription medication
  • Store and preserve biologicals, vaccines, serums, and other drugs subject to deterioration utilizing refrigeration and other methods
  • Order and maintain supply of drugs and other pharmaceuticals
  • Instruct interns and oversee the work of pharmacy technicians
  • Maintain records on all prescriptions filled and compute and record charges for billing purposes
  • Provide information to physicians and staff on availability of new drugs, warnings on marketed drugs, and drug incompatibilities
