About this role
Under the direction of the Retail Pharmacy Manager, the Retail Staff Pharmacist manages daily operations of the Retail Pharmacy according to Salinas Valley Health policies, professional standards, and State and Federal laws. This role prepares and provides appropriate pharmaceuticals to patients pursuant to licensed prescriber orders. It delivers drug information and counseling in accordance with regulatory requirements.
The Retail Staff Pharmacist verifies prescription orders accurately and dispenses pharmaceuticals timely to meet patient needs. Reviews prescriptions for legitimate reasons within the prescriber's scope and ensures appropriateness of drug, dose, and frequency, clarifying ambiguities as needed. Evaluates patient history for medication compliance and laboratory results to recommend therapy adjustments.
Prepares and dispenses prescriptions or supervises qualified Retail Pharmacy Technicians, verifying their work before patient delivery. Provides patient education and coordinates care with family members, caregivers, social services, and healthcare providers. Serves as a resource for drug information on indications, doses, interactions, and more across pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Exercises professional judgment to offer therapeutic information, listens to patient needs, and communicates medication adherence importance. Recognizes symptoms to recommend for benign conditions or refer for higher care. Documents clinical progress notes to support patient safety in medication processes.

Responsibilities
- Ensure patient pharmaceutical needs are met by accurately verifying prescription orders and dispensing pharmaceuticals in a timely manner
- Review and confirm prescriptions are written for legitimate reasons under the prescriber's usual scope of practice
- Ensure appropriateness of drug, dose, and frequency for each medication ordered and clarify ambiguities with the prescriber
- Evaluate patient history to assess medication compliance
- Evaluate laboratory results and recommend adjustments to therapies as appropriate
- Prepare and dispense prescriptions or supervise qualified Retail Pharmacy Technicians and verify their work
- Provide patient education and assist with coordination of care with family, caregivers, and healthcare providers
- Serve as a resource for drug information including indications, doses, side effects, interactions, and pharmacokinetics
