About this role
Under the direction of the Retail Pharmacy Manager, the Retail Staff Pharmacist is responsible for daily operations of the Retail Pharmacy according to policies, standards of practice, and State and Federal laws. Pursuant to the order of a licensed prescriber, they prepare and provide appropriate pharmaceuticals to patients. They provide drug information and counseling in accordance with regulatory requirements.
This role requires a high-level of responsibility and pharmaceutical knowledge to verify prescription orders accurately and dispense pharmaceuticals in a timely manner. They review prescriptions for legitimate reasons and ensure appropriateness of drug, dose, and frequency, clarifying ambiguities with the prescriber. Patient history and laboratory results are evaluated to assess compliance and recommend therapy adjustments.
The Retail Staff Pharmacist supervises qualified Retail Pharmacy Technicians, verifies their work, and provides patient education while coordinating care with family, caregivers, and providers. They serve as a resource for drug information on indications, doses, side effects, interactions, pharmacokinetics, and product availability. Competency is required across patient ages: pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
Effective communication and customer service enable listening to patients, interpreting needs, and exercising professional judgment for therapeutic recommendations. They communicate the importance of medication adherence and document clinical progress notes for safety oversight on prescribing, dispensing, compliance, and outcomes. Their expertise is paramount to the Retail Pharmacy's success in addressing patient concerns.
Requirements
- High-level of responsibility and pharmaceutical knowledge
- Effective communication skills and great customer service
- Ability to recognize and identify symptoms to recommend for benign conditions or refer to higher-level care
- Competent in the range of treatment needed by pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients
- Professional judgment to provide therapeutic and drug information to patients and health professionals
- Ability to listen carefully to patients and interpret their needs for appropriate advice
Responsibilities
- Verify prescription orders accurately and dispense pharmaceuticals in a timely manner to meet patient pharmaceutical needs
- Review and confirm prescriptions are written for a legitimate reason under the prescriber's usual scope of practice
- Ensure appropriateness of drug, dose, and frequency for each medication ordered and clarify ambiguities with the prescriber
- Evaluate patient history to assess medication compliance
- Evaluate laboratory results and recommend adjustments to therapies as appropriate
- Prepare and dispense prescriptions or supervise and verify qualified Retail Pharmacy Technicians
- Provide patient education and assist with coordination of care with family members, caregivers, and healthcare providers
- Serve as a resource for drug information including indications, doses, side effects, interactions, and pharmacokinetics
