About this role
The Advanced Specialist Pharmacist leads on delivering medicines optimisation and the contribution of pharmacists in the safe, effective and cost effective use of medicines. The role carries responsibility for pharmacy services to defined clinical areas with a high level of expertise and performance.
Day-to-day work includes providing specialised medication related advice on dosing, drug choice, administration, monitoring and the use of unlicensed medicines. The pharmacist also supplies medicines information and advice to patients to support adherence to prescribed treatments.
The post holder works within a multidisciplinary team across clinical areas such as cancer care, antimicrobial stewardship, cardiology and intensive care. They act as a professional resource advising other pharmacists and healthcare professionals in their area of expertise.
Professional leadership is demonstrated through effective communication, motivation of staff and challenging barriers to change. The role aligns with the six domains of advanced practice defined by the International Pharmaceutical Federation.
Requirements
- Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in a defined clinical specialty.
- High level of knowledge across multiple clinical areas to account for co-morbidities in treatment decisions.
- Capability across the six domains of advanced practice aligned with FIP Advanced Level II.
- Expert professional knowledge in medicines optimisation and safe use of medicines.
- Ability to provide advice on unlicensed medicines and medicines used outside product authorisation.
Responsibilities
- Lead and support medicines optimisation as part of a multidisciplinary team within the area of speciality.
- Deliver a specialised level of clinical input using advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of specialty.
- Provide specialised medication related advice including individualised advice on dosing, drug choice, administration and monitoring.
- Provide medicines information and advice to patients and support adherence to prescribed treatments.
- Contribute to the organisation’s wider antimicrobial stewardship programme.
- Act as a professional resource in advising other pharmacists and health care professionals in their area of expertise.
- Demonstrate professional leadership through effective communication, motivation of staff and challenging barriers to change.
