About this role

Working closely under the direct supervision of Pharmacists, the Pharmacy Technician Trainee assists in preparing and distributing medications, managing inventory and stock replacement, and ensuring appropriate billing for SOMC patients and staff. This contingent position supports the Discharge Pharmacy as needed.

Daily duties include accepting new written, faxed, or electronic prescription orders from a prescriber or agent. The trainee enters information into and retrieves information from a database or patient profile, prepares and affixes labels, and stocks dangerous drugs. Counting and pouring dangerous drugs into containers is also performed.

The role involves performing non-sterile and sterile drug compounding. The trainee packages and sells dangerous drugs to patients or patient representatives, and sends or receives electronic prescriptions between pharmacies accessing the same records. These tasks support the pharmacist in dispensing medications safely.

To grow in this role, the trainee must obtain Registered Certified Pharmacy Technician (OH) certification within 12 months of registration. Prior pharmacy technician training or experience is preferred but not required. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician Trainee required.
  • Must obtain Registered Certified Pharmacy Technician (OH) within 12 months of registration as Pharmacy Technician Trainee.
  • Failure to obtain certification within 12 months may result in termination of employment.
  • Pharmacy Technician training program or prior technician work experience preferred.
