The Ambulatory Pharmacist interprets physicians' prescriptions, compounds and dispenses medications within regulatory guidelines. This compliance-critical role supervises pharmacy technicians and handles complex problem resolution.

Daily duties include evaluating, preparing, and dispensing medications while verifying prescriptions against professional standards, facility procedures, and state and federal laws. Perform medication reconciliation to ensure seamless patient care upon discharge. Consult patients on dosage, frequency, specialized requirements, and potential drug interactions.

Interact closely with patients to address questions and concerns about medication therapy. Review and evaluate patient plans of care for therapeutic appropriateness. Supervise clinical activities of pharmacy technicians and monitor overall staff performance for regulatory compliance.

Assist in achieving business goals, including marketing events and fiscal management to optimize profits. Provide technical guidance, handle adjudicated claims, and maintain pricing structures. Make recommendations to improve operating procedures and patient care while responding promptly to escalated patient issues.

Requirements

  • Ability to interpret physicians' prescriptions and compound/dispense medications within regulatory guidelines
  • Knowledge of state and federal pharmacy legal requirements
  • Experience supervising clinical activities of pharmacy technicians
  • Proficiency in patient counseling on medication use and drug interactions
  • Skills in medication reconciliation and reviewing patient plans of care
  • Familiarity with pharmacy claims adjudication and reimbursement processes
  • Competence in maintaining quality assurance, controlled substances security, and record keeping
  • Ability to provide consultation on pharmacy and therapeutic matters

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, prepare, and dispense medications; verify prescribed medications according to professional standards, facility procedures, and state and federal legal requirements
  • Perform medication reconciliation processes to extend a seamless continuum of care for patients upon discharge
  • Consult with patients regarding individual medications or supplies prescribed, including dosage, frequency, specialized requirements and possible drug interactions
  • Review and evaluate patient's plan of care for therapeutic appropriateness
  • Supervise and manage functions for pharmacy technicians such as hiring, training, terminating, and performance management
  • Monitor the overall performance of pharmacy staff to ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational policies
  • Submit, review, and handle all adjudicated prescription claims to ensure appropriate reimbursement
  • Perform prescription verification and provide technical guidance to pharmacy technicians
