This position provides the technical functions associated with the delivery of clinical pharmacy services by maintaining proper stock levels in all pharmacy locations, compounding or otherwise preparing, filling, pricing, and delivering pharmaceuticals. The incumbent may also enter prescriptions, operate automated dispensing devices, and provide customer service.

As a Pharmacy Technician III, this role delivers advanced services such as IV therapy, preparation of chemotherapy, maintenance of automated dispensing machines, narcotic coordination, and investigational drug therapy. Technician IIIs have a higher level of responsibility for departmental and organizational problem solving and are expected to plan, coordinate, and implement training programs for other staff.

The University of Utah is a Level 1 Trauma Center nationally ranked for academic research, quality standards, and overall patient experience. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist and must provide care appropriate to the population served.

Requirements

  • Current Pharmacy Technician licensure in the State of Utah.
  • 6 months of experience as a Licensed Pharmacy Technician.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations for extemporaneous compounding and special dose preparation.
  • Knowledge and ability to rectify drug distribution errors, reconcile billing and administration records.
  • Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served.
  • Capability to stand for extended periods and handle heavy or bulky supply containers.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the pharmacist in advanced tasks associated with patient care.
  • Effectively manages supplies of the department and maintains proper stock levels.
  • Problem solves operational issues within the department and organization related to the medication use process.
  • Assists in education and training of staff and other trainees.
  • Compounds or prepares, fills, prices, and delivers pharmaceuticals and related items.
  • Operates and maintains automated dispensing devices and performs narcotic coordination.
  • Prepares IV therapy and chemotherapy as needed.
  • Performs billing, coding, and data entry for prescriptions and reports.
