About this role
This position provides technical support to pharmacists through preparation of unit doses, data entry, delivery of medications, and cart fill exchange. The role ensures accountability and accuracy of standard operations procedures. It works under direct supervision of a Pharmacist responsible for safe drug distribution to inpatients and outpatients from neonates to elderly over 65.
Daily tasks include computer order entry of inpatient and outpatient orders, filling unit dose medication orders, and selecting medications from inventory for patient rooms. Technicians prioritize labels to deliver products one hour prior to due time, organize work areas, restock, and remove expired medications. Rounding to nursing locations involves delivering items and returning excess or discontinued dosages to pharmacy.
Unit dose functions encompass tubing medications to hospital and clinic areas, repackaging for dispensing, maintaining emergency trays, recording refrigerator temperatures, and processing narcotics. The position maintains barcode medication integrity and manufacturing logs for regulatory compliance. It performs other technician duties as assigned based on operational needs.
Work occurs in an environment with possible exposure to hazardous chemicals and noise, requiring safe handling of hazardous medications per guidelines. Flexibility exists in scheduling shift times under supervision of diverse Pharmacists. The role demands ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodation.
Requirements
- High School degree
- State of Oregon Pharmacy Technician License, including completion and maintenance of job-specific competencies and certifications
- Completion of training competencies
- Computer keyboard skills
- Ability to read and understand medical-related terms
- Ability to perform basic pharmaceutical mathematics calculations
- Knowledge of and skill at application of aseptic technique
- Ability to establish priorities in workflow
Responsibilities
- Assist pharmacist through computer order entry of inpatient and outpatient orders
- Fill unit dose medication orders and select ordered medications from inventory
- Load and refill medications into automated dispensing cabinet stations
- Prioritize labels from new orders to assure delivery one hour prior to due time
- Round to nursing locations, deliver items, and remove excess or discontinued medications
- Tube medications from pharmacy to hospital and clinic areas
- Process narcotics for removal from inventory and order replacements as needed
- Maintain manufacturing logs and documents to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies
