About this role

The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician supports pharmaceutical care by performing routine technical tasks related to medication preparation, distribution, and inventory management under pharmacist supervision. This entry-level role develops core inpatient pharmacy skills and supports safe, timely medication delivery across inpatient care areas.

Daily tasks include retrieving prescriptions, entering data, labeling, and maintaining patient profiles before receiving a pharmacy technician permit. After permit receipt, the technician prepares and labels medications, fills automated dispensing cabinets, restocks crash carts, and performs basic sterile and non-sterile compounding.

The technician works within a team of pharmacists and senior technicians, maintaining cleanliness and organization in the pharmacy and IV rooms. They assist with inventory management, receiving shipments, and ensuring compliance with USP and regulatory standards.

This role offers a structured pathway to develop technical skills in a hospital pharmacy setting, with responsibilities expanding as certification and experience grow. Technicians participate in training, competency assessments, and daily inventory counts, building a foundation for advancement.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • No experience required; entry-level role.
  • Ability to obtain Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy Technician Permit (permit process supported).
  • Willingness to perform auxiliary supportive personnel functions until permit is received.
  • Ability to comply with all regulatory, safety, infection control, and quality standards.
  • Capability to assist with basic recordkeeping, accounts receivable support, and third-party billing under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Retrieves prescriptions, medication records, or files as directed.
  • Performs clerical tasks including data entry, typing labels, and maintaining patient profiles.
  • Prepares, labels, and delivers medications accurately and timely under pharmacist supervision.
  • Fills automated dispensing cabinets and unit dose cassettes according to established procedures.
  • Restocks and maintains crash carts, emergency kits, and medication supplies as assigned.
  • Performs basic sterile and non-sterile compounding under supervision and according to USP and departmental standards.
  • Assists with receiving, unpacking, checking in, and shelving medications and supplies from vendors.
  • Participates in daily physical inventory counts and reports unreconciled discrepancies promptly to pharmacy leadership.
