The Advanced Specialist Pharmacist Medicines Guide position is a temporary part-time role in the Pharmacy Department at Beaumont Hospital. Reporting to the Chief II Pharmacist JCI & Projects and Medicines Information, it focuses on maintaining high-quality medicines information. Appointment aligns with the advanced specialist salary scale from €81,937 to €93,932.

Daily duties include establishing and updating the Beaumont Medicines Guide to ensure patient-centered, safe, and comprehensive information. Provide expert advice on medicines guidance while working closely with medical teams to incorporate cost-effective treatments into protocols. Monitor formulary compliance alongside hospital guidelines for optimal medicine use.

Collaborate with lead pharmacists in accreditation projects, medicines information, ward, dispensary, aseptic, antimicrobial, and medication safety teams. Assist in managing high-cost or non-formulary medication requests and flag prescribing pathways in the pharmacy drug file. Support medication shortages by proposing alternatives and facilitate admission/discharge flows.

Participate in the hospital's medication safety programme and preparations for inspections by JCI, HIQA, and other bodies. Identify priority developments from clinical feedback and develop/review prescribing guidelines. Promote evidence-based medicines using pharmacy, financial, and critical appraisal skills amid conflicting evidence.

Requirements

  • Knowledgeable and up to date with local, national and international evidence based guidelines
  • Patient-centred focus ensuring high quality, safe and comprehensive medicines information
  • Pharmacy, financial and critical appraisal skills to promote cost-effective evidence based medicines
  • Ability to manage conflicting opinions and evidence and advise on lack of information
  • Expertise in formulary compliance and medicines management
  • Skills in protocol development for prescribing pathways including high tech and managed access drugs
  • Experience working with clinical ward pharmacists, dispensary, aseptic, antimicrobial and medication safety teams

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain up-to-date information in the Beaumont Medicines Guide
  • Provide expert professional and highly specialised advice on medicines guidance
  • Work closely with medical teams on the clinical cost effective use of medicines incorporating these into treatment guidance and protocols
  • Promote safe, effective and cost effective use of medicines by monitoring formulary compliance
  • Work closely with lead pharmacists to develop and update protocols
  • Assist lead pharmacists to manage meetings with prescribers for high cost, non-formulary, or managed access medications
  • Participate in the hospital medication safety programme and preparations for JCI, HIQA inspections
  • Develop and review hospital prescribing guidelines
