About this role
This position primarily serves the Infectious Disease clinic and involves direct patient care and collaboration with other healthcare providers. A strong clinical pharmacy background with an understanding of retail pharmacy operations and prescription processing is optimal to succeed in this role.
Day-to-day responsibilities include maintaining a presence in the clinic, fielding medication questions from providers on formulary selection, dosing, and adverse drug reactions. The pharmacist also coordinates patient refills, prepares prior authorizations, and manages denials and appeals to ensure medication access.
This role is based onsite at the Reading Hospital Ambulatory Pharmacy, a 700-bed facility in West Reading, Pennsylvania, where Cencora has managed and staffed the pharmacy since 2017. The team has since expanded to four additional retail pharmacy locations serving the Reading community and outpatient provider offices.
Cross-training to the ambulatory pharmacy and assisting with staffing as needed provides opportunities to contribute to the expansion of ambulatory pharmacy services. Active participation in the navigator committee and projects helps shape the future of patient care in this growing practice.
Requirements
- Current unrestricted pharmacist license in the appropriate state of practice
- 5+ years community/retail/ambulatory pharmacy or health-system related experience
- Previous experience in a specialty pharmacy and/or processing prior authorizations is highly desirable
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Prior experience on pharmacy dispensing systems and familiarity with insurance adjudication processes
- Ability to navigate various platforms and document appropriately in EMR and specialty therapy management platform
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate value of ambulatory pharmacy partnership to physician practices
- Maintain presence in clinic and field medication questions from providers regarding formulary product selection, dosing, ADRs, and other considerations
- Ensure prescriptions flow through ambulatory pharmacy and are identified by pharmacy staff
- Maintain patient schedule for clinical pharmacist services including medication counseling, pillbox refills, immunization, and medication administration
- Coordinate patient refills and ensure auditable records showing proof-of-delivery are maintained
- Prepare and submit prior authorizations, manage denials and appeals
- Act as financial advocate for patients by leveraging charitable foundations, state programs, and manufacturer programs to ensure medication affordability
- Contribute to expansion of ambulatory pharmacy services through active participation in navigator committee and projects
