About this role

This role leads and guides Specialty Pharmacy Technicians in the performance of duties while also performing all functions of a Specialty Pharmacy Technician. The position participates in orientation and ongoing training of staff and handles difficult or complex related issues.

Day-to-day responsibilities include initiating the patient intake process, creating and maintaining patient records in the pharmacy software system, and providing patient-centric customer service in-person, over the phone, and through written communication. The technician communicates with patients and healthcare providers to facilitate filling prescriptions and coordinate medication deliveries.

Work involves navigating insurance plans, billing third-party payors, and addressing payor rejections using knowledge of overrides and manual billing. The technician assists the licensed pharmacist in non-clinical aspects of preparing medications and complies with FDA mandates and manufacturer restrictions, including REMS programs.

The role also includes managing inventory, monitoring for outdated medications, and ensuring proper rotation and storage. This position assists management with staff scheduling and prioritizing work based on workflow fluctuations, offering growth through mentorship and complex problem-solving.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Current license as a Registered Pharmacy Technician in New York State, required as of 4/25/21.
  • Current Pharmacy Technician Certification required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience required.
  • Knowledge of specialty pharmacy accrediting bodies such as URAC and ACHC.
  • Experience with pharmacy software systems and electronic medical record platforms.
  • Ability to handle complex prescription issues and coordinate medication deliveries.

  • Assists licensed Pharmacist in non-clinical aspects of preparing medications by filling, packing, labeling, and stocking medications.
  • Complies with FDA mandates, REMS programs, and manufacturer limited distribution drug requirements.
  • Maintains knowledge of specialty accrediting body standards and completes annual specialty competencies.
